|“You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself in any direction you choose. You’re on your own. And you know what you know. And YOU are the one who’ll decide where to go.” Dr. Seuss Hi Terri,|
As the United States celebrates Independence Day today, I am reflecting on what it means to be independent – and Dr. Seuss sums it up quite nicely. Freedom is not only about having the opportunity to make choices, but it’s also about using that freedom to decide what you want to do, who you want to be, and where you want to go.
When I decided to be a full-time, professional speaker I didn’t have a Plan B. I chose to keep going – no matter what it took until it happened. What did it take? Blasting through my 401K, chalking up six figures in credit card debt, countless rejections, speaking as often as possible, thousands of hours on the phone and sending out mailings, going to networking events, and on and on.
At any point, I could have quit – goodness knows that there were plenty of times that I “should have” quit. But when you keep going – against the odds – you find a way to make it happen. Thankfully, ten years later, I’m doing what I love and having a blast.
If there’s something you’ve always wanted to do, but haven’t chosen to get started, why not do something this week towards your goal. The road ahead may be long and at times frustrating, but the end results is so worth it!
Happy Fourth of July!
PS – This week, I’m also grateful that Scott is on vacation and my mom is in town. We get to be tourists in Cleveland this week. What fun it is to show off our home town!
